Beatrix lives on the edge of a no man’s land, training relentlessly to defend what remains of her family while she mourns her mother and wrestles with an unnamed, tightening dread. When raiders close in, Beatrix discovers the real force shaping her life: The Creator, a solitary man on a hilltop, calmly typing her every move into existence. He tells Beatrix that her mother’s death, her suffering, and even her courage were engineered to serve a neat “character arc.” Refusing to be a story that happens to her, Beatrix tries to act outside the script and the world retaliates, twisting each act of defiance into brutal consequences. As reality fractures under the strain of her rebellion, she must decide what freedom costs when the author refuses to let go. In the end, Beatrix does not simply endure her fate.
