Project Synopsis
When a stranger at his community center dances exactly like the girl he lost in El Salvador 40 years ago, Santiago signs up for her salsa class and lets one secret move answer the question he's too afraid to ask.
Character 1
SANTIAGO GUTIERREZ
Age
Playing 20 (actors 18–28)
Gender
Male
Description
Latin · Spanish-speaking Strong dance background (salsa, cumbia) preferred. The family’s “el Bailarín”: cocky, charming and lit up from inside whenever he dances. He insists he’s leading, even when his partner is the star. The audience must fall for the spark the older Santiago will lose.
Character 2
ROXANNA LOPEZ
Age
Playing 20 (actors 18–28)
Gender
Female
Description
Latin · Spanish-speaking Strong dance background (salsa, cumbia) preferred; must sing. Naturally beautiful and more than a match for Santiago, on the floor and off it. Sharp, teasing and completely sure of her talent. She sings at his birthday, and her voice is the last calm moment before the war arrives. That night she is torn away from him, and she grows up believing he died.
Character 3
PATRICIA GUTIERREZ
Age
Playing 23 (actors 20–30)
Gender
Female
Description
Latin · Spanish-speaking Santiago’s older sister: bossy, loud and loving, and never misses a chance to call him an idiot in public. Secretly proud of him. Strong comic timing.
Character 4
ROXANNA LOPEZ (PRESENT DAY)
Age
55 (actors 45–65)
Gender
Female
Description
Spanish-speaking Strong dance background (salsa, cumbia) preferred. A warm, commanding dance teacher, recently widowed and newly moved from San Francisco. She is at peace with her husband’s death and still carries the joy she promised never to give up. For forty years she has believed Santiago died the night of his birthday, and every year on that date she lights a candle for him.
Character 5
PATRICIA GUTIERREZ (PRESENT DAY)
Age
Playing 58 (actors 45–68)
Gender
Female
Description
Forty years on, the same fire. She keeps their parents’ memory alive in a home full of Salvadoran art, and won’t let her brother keep hiding from life. Funny and blunt, with grief right underneath. Beginner-level dancing.
Additional Characters

HILDA · Supporting · (actors 25 – 60) · Open ethnicity - Open Gender
The community-centre receptionist, lost in her own world and her very particular matcha latte. Suspicious, nosy and quietly invested in everyone’s business, especially Santi’s. Deadpan comedy.

EDUARDO · Supporting · Playing 40s (actors 38–58) · Latin · Spanish-speaking Guitar a strong plus.
Jose’s best friend and the party’s lovable troublemaker. He steals drinks, burps at the wrong moment, then picks up a guitar and plays beautifully. He steps out into the dark with Jose and is killed; the guitar he leaves behind is still humming. Mostly physical comedy.

JOSE GUTIERREZ · Supporting · Playing late 40s (actors 42–58) · Latin · Spanish-speaking
Rosa’s husband: easygoing, proud father, happiest by the radio with his friends. He takes his scolding with a nod and passes it straight on to Eduardo.

ROSA GUTIERREZ · Supporting · Playing late 40s (actors 42–58) · Latin · Spanish-speaking
The Gutierrez matriarch. She runs the party, her husband and her children with warmth and a firm hand. Her joy watching her son dance turns in an instant into terror.
